Evaluation
Medical and psychiatric records pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of GD will be requested from the patient’s previous physicians for review. A history and physical examination relevant to GD, including an examination of the genitalia, will be performed by a practitioner. Inmates claiming to have GD will be referred to a staff mental health professional for evaluation and support. The medical and/or psychiatric reports will include, but be limited to information about past medical and psychiatric illness; previous operative procedures; sexual activity (homosexual, heterosexual, and bisexual activity); details of prior or current hormone therapy; inmate’s plans for future surgery and life style; action inmate has taken or intends to take toward amending birth certificate; past counseling received by the inmate; description of the external genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics (body hair, breasts, voice); assessment of mental competence and emotional/psychiatric status, and evaluation of any characteristics that might affect the inmate’s ability to adjust to a particular facility or the facility’s capability to house the inmate.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis will be made by treating mental health staff at Nevada Correction facility or established by previous psychiatric and medical records upon the prisoner’s entrance into the prison. Treating staff are licensed mental health professionals.
Medicalization
Inmates who are receiving chemical or hormonal treatment for GD at the time of incarceration will have that treatment continued. Upon review and evaluation of the inmate for a diagnosis of GD, the practitioner(s) at the facility will determine if initiation or continuation of hormone therapy is necessary for the inmate’s overall health, or if cessation of the hormone therapy would have serious negative health consequences. Follow up care in either situation will be determined by the treating practitioner and based on the current medical and/or mental health classification of the inmate. All inmates on hormone therapy will be given education concerning the potential risks and will be instructed concerning self-examination and self-monitoring.
