Take Action to Support Incarcerated Women in New Jersey
The state of New Jersey is housing men in the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women (EMCFW). In April, it was reported that two incarcerated women had become pregnant by some of the so-called “transgender” inmates.
On May 27, the online feminist magazine Reduxx published this piece containing an interview with one of the women inside. Miseka Diggs, who is housed at EMCFW, states that the women inside are “scared to death” of the men. “It is like you are living in an abusive situation. We feel like we are part of some sick joke. This is a nightmare that we can’t wake up from. The women here are traumatized over and over again and it seems as if no one cares about our needs.”
This is happening because of a June 28, 2021 settlement agreement entered into between a man (represented by the ACLU) demanding to be housed in the women’s prison. As part of the settlement, the state agreed to provide for a period of at least one year from the date of the agreement “a presumption that all inmates [would] be housed in line with their gender identity, rather than their sex assigned at birth.” That policy has been in place since.
