Elizabeth Chesak, coordinator of the WDI USA Desisted & Detransitioned Women’s Caucus, interviews detransitioner Claire Abernathy.
Claire began “identifying as a boy” at 11 years old after experiencing a traumatic sexual assault. By her 15th birthday, she was nearly a year on cross-sex hormones and had undergone a double mastectomy to remove her healthy, developing breasts. After detransitioning, Claire initially advocated against bans on child medicalization, believing she was protecting others. However, as she learned more about the long-term consequences and risks, she became a passionate advocate for safeguarding children from irreversible decisions.

Sex is a powerful influence on the young. Sexual maturation causes dramatic changes that are often uncomfortable, unexplained, and managed based on family and cultural norms. Our society has evolved to a point of physicians not being able to fix everyone all the time, but some of them
are getting paid to play God in these gender cases where many examples reveal poor counseling work, negligent surgical consults, and an overall
failure to accept that humanity has survived very well for many thousands of years without an understanding of sexual dysphoria, or doctors
seeking to fix what in many if not most cases is purely misdiagnosed. MD’s Hippocratic oath has been abandoned by those who would put personal profits ahead of the best health outcomes of their child patients.
