On February 25, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Equality Act, which redefines sex to include “gender identity” for all purposes related to civil rights in the U.S., including public accommodations.

This meant that the bill, which would be horrific for women and girls, was now before the U.S. Senate, and by Senate rule, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer had the authority to bring the bill to a vote on the floor of the Senate at any time.

On March 12, 2021, the WDI USA sent a letter to Majority Leader Schumer, signed by thousands of Declaration signatories all over the world, explaining how devastating the Equality Act would be to women and girls globally.

We sent that letter directly to the email address of one of his staffers, who confirmed that she had received it and told us that she would make sure that he saw it.

We have no conclusive evidence that this letter influenced Majority Leader Schumer’s decision not to bring the Equality Act to a vote on the floor of the Senate in 2021, but we would like to think that it did.
